Richard Plincke RI wall panel installation…

A while ago Richard Plincke RI became involved in an unusual project to design, paint an install a series of large scale panels to ‘brighten up a building site’. An interesting journey told here in his own words:

‘During a lapse between lunch party courses,, the conversation took an unexpected turn, “We have a boring collection of grey hoardings round our building site…can you think of something to brighten them up a bit?”…”Yes of course,” etc….

I went round to take a look at them and after some thought I said I’d take on seven hoardings. Those came to about 25ft in length and 7ft in height, so I asked a friend and fellow artist, Tony Styles, if he’d work with me on this and, luckily for me, he did. We took another look…

We couldn’t reach the top easily (!!) with a paintbrush; and so devised 3 marine ply sub-panels each for the central five panels, so that we could work at table top level; painted the end two black and edged those with vertical planks, painted fluorescent red. Then came a scaled painting – (the only application of watercolour I can offer!) – and set to in the studio. We were thus able to set out all the colours concerned, plus numbering the panels, for ease of layout when fixing them in position. Our final touch was to paint the galvanised screw heads to tally with their background colour, (perfectionists as we decided to be).’ – Richard Plincke RI
