“I have been working on an installation commissioned by the Garden Museum. This will be a fully immersive drawn environment created in ink and watercolour on paper. It would be great if you could come along and see it. The exhibition runs 6 July to 4 September, ‘The Secret Garden’ exhibition” – Juliette Losq RI
The Secret Garden (first published 1911) tells the story of Mary Lennox, a disagreeable 10-year-old orphan sent to live her widowed uncle at his sprawling and mysterious Yorkshire estate. Here she discovers the key to a long-abandoned hidden walled garden, which she begins to tend. As Mary cares for the plants in the garden, joined by her sickly cousin Colin Craven, its restorative powers help her overcome her grief. The garden also heals Colin, who had previously been unable to walk.
As well as celebrating illustrations fromThe Secret Garden, our exhibition will explore Frances Hodgson Burnett’s keen interest in gardening in real life, including her gardens at Great Maytham Hall, Kent – famous for providing the inspiration for The Secret Garden – and Plandome Manor, in New York state.
This exhibition has been generously supported by The John Coates Charitable Trust.
